![]() ![]() You will not just be building computers all day. You will be frustrated when things don’t go your way or you can’t figure things out. No, people will call you only when something is wrong. You’re not going to just breeze by and relax every day. Also know that help desk can be, and most likely will be STRESSFUL. And be okay with walking away if it’s a bad fit. A lot of people feel like they’ll never get called back, but it will happen. Do not be discouraged if you fill out 100 applications and only get 10 call backs. Anyone here can tell you, most people spend months filling out help desk applications. You will not get called back on most, yes MOST, of your applications. Whatever the reason, there are other options. Some people are solo learners, some don’t like tests. Now I would always advise to continue your education and also have the certifications behind you to really stand out, but college isn’t for everyone. And you’ll learn things you didn’t think you were missing. You can skip it if you already have a CCNA or something, but if you’re here and you don’t have any skills, you have to start at the A+. Have you noticed that every road on that map starts with a CompTIA A+ certification? That’s why I’m telling you to get. Well, here’s a PDF that shows a general road map of what certifications lead to which careers. “How do I know what certifications will go towards my career?” You need to show your employer initiative and that you know more than just the basics. You’ll need those certificates to keep moving if you’re not going to go to college. Software development? You can get your Microsoft Specialist and OCPJP. Want to go into Hardware and Infrastructure? Get your Server+ and CWNA. ![]() Want to go into network security? Get yourself your Network+, Security+ and your CCNA/CCNP. This little knowledge will go a long way for you.Īlso, while you’re at a help desk position, continue getting your certificates. You need to know how to fix it next time and why it broke in the first place. Do not accept the answer “it just works that way.” That is the worst approach. When you get a call to fix something, and you can’t figure out how to fix it, so you transfer it to another employee, go back and ask them what they did and why. You can’t just jump in as a Sys Admin, even with a degree. This position is the starting ground for 98% of the individuals who get into IT. It’s the absolute basics, but it will help you get into a Help Desk/Service Desk position. All that says is you know how computers work. See, there are tons of different fields that follow “computers.” Once you decide on which field you want to go into, you need to educate yourself on the field. They’re not necessarily cheap, but they are affordable and trust me, you’re not going anywhere without one or the other. If you’re thinking “I can’t afford college!” or “College isn’t for me.” Then get your certifications. You need to educate yourself one way or another. There’s so much more to a computer that a lot of people underestimate/overlook. There’s networks, servers, coding, engineering, VPN’s, TCP/IP, WAN, PKI’s etc. There is so much to technology that you haven’t scratched the surface on. The knowledge behind IT doesn’t “come naturally.” These are COMPLEX systems. Let me tell you, the thing about IT is that being able to build a computer, or google your answers doesn’t make you good with computers. Now hold on, before you burn me at the stake for trying to insult your intelligence and capabilities. You’re coming here thinking “I’m good with computers!” 90% of you are probably the “IT guy” for your family. They think computers are cool, they love the newest phones and game systems. ![]() Now if this sounds like you, take a minute to read what I’m about to say.Įveryone, and I mean EVERYONE comes to IT the exact same way. I just made this post a little while ago as a response to a user asking about How can I get into IT with no experience? Sorry to click bait everyone, but this post comes around too often.
